GALENA YOUNG LIFE

Located on the Yukon River 300 miles from the nearest highway, Young Life Galena thinks the world of kids. We believe that they deserve to know what life can hold for them. Our staff and volunteer leaders are caring adults who come sharing that hope as well as fun and lasting friendships with kids.

Galena Young Life serves both the Sydney C Huntington High School and Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA); a boarding school that serves over 200 students from over 70 villages all over rural Alaska.

MARTIN & SILKE HORNFISCHER

Picture
Martin is an elder of Galena Bible Church and has been with the church since November 2010. They are with SEND North and have five sons.

In November 2010 we began our ministry in Galena, Alaska. Though we'd never been in a bush village, we immediately fell in love with the people. The ministry in this Yukon River village is manifold; building relationships is a priority and we do this through personal visitation, leading parenting workshops and many other means. The Galena Interior Learning Academy (G.I.L.A.) also presents ministry opportunities with nearly 200 students from remote communities across the state. Looking beyond Galena, we're reaching out to surrounding villages in cooperation with Galena Bible Church. We are originally from Germany.

JON & MARYANNA CASEY

Picture
Jon and Maryanna are full-time church planters with InterAct.  They have been serving in the village of Nulato since August 2015. They have seven children.

Jon grew up in a strong Christian home and put his trust in Christ while very young. In 1994 he was baptized and committed to follow God with his life. His parents are missionaries and he was able to join them in ministry as God cultivated his heart for missions. MaryAnna trusted Christ as her personal Savior at the age of five. As she grew up and faced challenges in life she went through a time of questioning God’s existence. It was through this season that her faith was tested and solidified. In 9th grade she rededicated her life to God and chose to follow Him with her life.
Jon and MaryAnna have seven children and consider them to be their first ministry and other forms of ministry pour out from their family to those around them.
While attending Alaska Bible College from 2002-2006, they became active in praying for the villages in Alaska and were made aware of many of the needs off the road system. They heard of the drugs, alcohol and suicide, and especially noticed the high number of villages with no Christian families living in the communities. It was through this time that their hearts were drawn towards western Alaska.
The Casey’s moved to the village of Nulato, 300 miles west of Fairbanks on the Yukon River. Their hope is to live there long term where they can reflect Christ to those around them and encourage friends and neighbors as they serve God in Alaska.

BRAD & MADELYN FOX

Picture
We are the Arctic Foxes. Our family was led by the Lord to serve in Alaska as church planters years ago, and we've watched Him faithfully open doors for us to live among the Athabascan peoples of the North, declaring the praises of the Savior who is worthy.

We live in a remote bush village located on the Arctic Circle. There is no Bible church in this village of about 150 people, and our prayer is to see the Lord establish a Body of believers in this village who proclaim and exalt Gods Name and Renown, both in this village and surrounding villages.

We spent nearly two years in the bush village of Galena and after being displaced by the 2013 flood, the Lord opened up housing for us in Huslia. We spent one year being mentored by a missionary couple there, and that next year we moved to the village we currently reside in, desiring to live in this village long-term. We have two daughters, Ruth and Naomi, who are a great help in ministry.

Please pray we'll be confident in the Word and for hearts to soften as we proclaim the Gospel.

BRANDON & BETH FISCHER

Picture
We are serving as church planters in the remote village of Huslia, AK, among the Athabaskan Indians. We seek to lead people to Christ and equip them for the work of the ministry by teaching and living out the truth and love we have been shown by God in His Word.
Alaska has many villages without a Bible believing/teaching church or a regular Gospel witness. We strive to be salt and light to the community of over 300 Native people. We do this by running weekly programs for the kids, holding service on Sundays, and living the subsistence lifestyle of the local people.
We are raising our four children-- Emma (1/26), Mattie (5/14), Adelyn (3/19), and Boaz (11/25)—in the bush, and they enjoy it as much as we do!

JORDAN & JESSICA MARTIN

Picture
Jordan and Jessica grew up on the same street, went to school together from elementary through high school, and were married in 2007. They served with Ethnos Canada Indigenous Ministries for a short time, working with indigenous people under the title of Indigenous Church Engagement. They have five children and began a new role in 2021 with InterAct in Ruby, Alaska. The Martins will be working alongside Native believers and long to see a thriving church with believers who are growing ever closer to the Lord.

KARL & SIMONE THISTLE

Picture
Karl and Simone were longtime members of Galena Bible Church until God called them into fulltime ministry. The Thistles serve with Covenant Youth of Alaska (CYAK) as the Anchorage Aarigaa House Directors.

I have the privilege of serving CYAK as the Resident Director of the Aarigaa House. As the House RD, my main focus is growing the community within the house and intentionally discipling residents. I grew up in Willow, AK as the younger sibling in a family of four. Prior to this role, my wife and I worked in the dorms at a boarding school in Galena, AK. During those six years we were able to experience and appreciate a variety of cultures from all across the state. Little did we know, God was specifically teaching and preparing us to serve within this cross-cultural ministry. We have been encouraged by the growth we have seen in our residents and in the program as a whole, and eagerly look forward to seeing Christs continued work at the Aarigaa Discipleship House.
